Please arrive promptly. Call Gerry MacLeod at 252-321-2710 or email macleodg@ecu.edu or Fr. Edward if you have concerns or questions.
Electronic Giving
Electronic giving is an easier, more secure way to make your regular contributions to the church through automated giving. You can use electronic giving for the weekly offertory, debt reduction and school tuition assistance collections. Some of the advantages of using electronic giving are no need to write checks, more secure than writing checks, you decide exactly when to contribute, and peace of mind knowing the church is receiving your contribution, even when you are unable to attend Mass. If you are intrested in signing up for electronic giving, just pick up a form in the atrium, complete it and turn it in to the office. There are also forms available in the office.
Dear Friends,
St. Peterʼs School Graduation: Thursday morning we had the graduation Mass from our grammar school. Following Mass, the mothers of the 7th graders provided a wonderful breakfast buffet for the graduates and their families the diplomas were presented in the evening at a 7pm ceremony. 43 students graduated. A smaller class than usual, they were especially appreciated by their teachers for their overall goodness. Mr. John Donohue, Principal of John Paul II High School gave the commencement.
Election of Officers 2012-2013 for the Pastoral Council: Following the election of new members for the Council, the officers were elected on last Wednesday. Mary Wilson was re-elected Chair, Art Schneider was elected Vice-Chair and Patty Crew re-elected Secretary. I thanked them for accepting. I welcome to the Council the new members: Rick Styers, Jackie Tucci and Marcus Waller. I thank the outgoing members: Mark Cervi, Michele Reisch and Mattie Moye Bridgers.
Gallup Poll: Drop in ʻpro-choiceʼ Americans: New Gallup Poll (May, 2012) finds support for legal abortion at its lowest ebb in 12 years. 41% of Americans call themselves ʻpro-choiceʼ. 50% of respondents describe themselves as ʻpro-lifeʼ. 75% of all Americans support legal restrictions on abortion and 25% support abortion being allowed under all circumstances according to Gallup. There was a 10% drop in both Democrats and Independents who described themselves as ʻpro-choiceʼ (58% and 41% respectively.) This is evidence of the effectiveness of prayer and the pro-life movement.
Ashley Farris: was feted by the CCD teachers, parents and children last Sunday as she concludes her 5 years of service as Faith Formation Director for Children. Everyone mentioned her dedication, organizational skills and kindness have led to the strong, well attended program that is now in place. Not only has the program reached out to many more children, but there has been a wonderful integration of the children from both Catholic and Public schools in sacramental formation. The establishing of a “Childrenʼs” RCIA is to her credit. We are grateful and pray for the arrival of her 7th child.
Seminarian – Marlon Mendieta: will arrive June 4th and remain with us till July 15th at which time he will accompany Fr. Ned Schlesinger on a mission trip to Honduras. Bishop Burbidge writes: “I thank you for your willingness to supervise a seminarian for a pastoral intern experience this summer. I am appointing Marlon Mendieta to serve in your parish…to grow in his vocation toward Priesthood.” Fr. Edward and I will do our best to help Marlon. Please feel free to invite him to your house on occasion for dinner.
Vacation Bible School: Claire Stoner, coordinator, tells me VBS is all set to go June 18-22. There is a legion of adult and high school student volunteers to help with its running. 220 students are registered. WOW!
40th Anniversary of Ordination Celebration: At the 12:10 Sunday Mass on June 10th, Fr. Edward Wolanski, Fr. Peter Grace and I will concelebrate. The three of us were ordained together on May 19th, 1972 by Bishop Reginald Arliss, C.P. A reception will follow for the parish in our spiritual center. You are very welcome to join us in thanking God for the 40 years of priesthood.
Need Volunteers: Shortly, our parish will be called upon to enter into the capital Campaign conducted for the building of a cathedral for the Raleigh Diocese. This will be the central worship site for the half-million Catholics of our diocese for ordination, rite of election, Chrism mass and all big diocesan celebrations. I need volunteers for all sorts of positions in coordinating this effort at St. Peterʼs. Our parish is in the 2nd group to raise money. Already over $26,000,000 has been pledged. I need a general chairperson for the campaign here and many others in supporting roles. This main committee is a high profile committee that will work with the diocese and coordinate our parish. Please consider serving. Give me a call if interested.
Eucharistic Minister Guidelines: At the Parish Council meeting on Tuesday, we began discussing and reviewing these guidelines with the Bishop. This will be at least a 6-month process. Certain things will affect us. Most likely, there will be no blessings or touching of those coming to Communion but not receiving. The Blessing at Mass is given by the priest after Communion. When all is ready and issued by the Bishop, we will have a workshop for all Eucharistic Ministers before implementation. Following these guidelines will come others for lectors and cantors.
Thanks to the Knights of Columbus: They conducted a very successful golf tournament to benefit John Paul II High School and the Scouts. Thanks for all of your work on behalf of our Church.
In Christ,
Fr. Justin Kerber, C.P.
Faith is a gift from God which reaches man through the message of absolute truth, but it is, at the same time, the response of the person who sincerely seeks an encounter with God. ~ Bl. John Paul II, Homily, Brazil 1991
